A select component allows users to choose from a list of options by displaying a dropdown menu.

When to use

  • Use the select component when users need to choose from a predefined set of options.
  • Use it when the list of options is relatively short, typically less than 10 items, to avoid overwhelming users.

When not to use

  • Avoid using the select component for long lists of options, as it can become difficult for users to navigate.
  • Avoid using it when users need to select multiple options simultaneously, in which case a multi-select component may be more appropriate.

Alternative components:

  • For long lists of options, consider using a typeahead or autocomplete component to allow users to search for specific options.
  • For selecting multiple options, use a multi-select component or checkboxes.

Accessibility

  • Ensure the select component is keyboard accessible, allowing users to navigate and select options using the keyboard alone.
  • Provide clear and concise labels for the select component and its options to assist users who rely on screen readers.
  • Use proper contrast ratios for text and background colours to ensure readability for users with low vision.
  • Test the select component with screen reader software to ensure it is fully functional and understandable for all users.
